Gallon | Made in Italy | Brio | Le Trader
The Sydney Connection in conjunction with Pyrmont & Ultimo Chamber of Commerce proudly presents our latest dining walk as part of City of Sydney’s Village Food Adventures for Good Food Month
As the former working port of Sydney Harbour with a multitude of wharves, shipbuilding yards, factories and wool store’s this waterfront suburb has had many different lives. Down to a population of only 900 in the 1980’s this prime real estate is now home to million dollar apartments in the old wharf buildings. Modern apartment blocks overlook the old all boasting stunning views of the upper harbour. The original sandstone terraces that line Harris Street are a reminder of its colonial past when in 1799 the land was sold for just a gallon of rum.
The restaurant and bar population has also grown over the last 25 years and now proudly features a diverse food offering from Taiwan, Italy and Persia to contemporary seafood eating houses. So come and discover all that Pyrmont has to offer as you wine & dine your way around this waterfront precinct with your local guide.
First off we meet for a pre-walk drink in the sandstone front bar, under the lovely old photograph of Grandma Lietl – beloved relative of Gallon’s co-owner Julian – as she stands proudly amongest the salamis in her 1940’s Melbourne Deli. Good hospitality clearly runs strong in this family! Then we pop round the corner to see the cheerful crew at Made in Italy for entrée. Where owners Sergio & Claudia honour their Italian heritage – with simple flavours & fresh ingredients. Love and care is at the heart of everything they do whether it be pizza or pasta.
It’s back-up to the other end of Harris Street t to enjoy the worthy-of-anticipation mains at Brio – the local bistro nestled a in a tiny terrace house. With the floor manned with ease & grace by Roman and his Co-owner Saroji confidentially taking charge of the kitchen. Serving-up Brio’s signature Herb Potato Gnocchi, w/ mushrooms, truffle paste & Meredith goat cheese accompanied by a matching red or white wine from the list of fine Mudgee locals.
Le Trader are our final hosts for the evening – a delightful café/provedore style business again situated on Harris. Husband & wife team Christophe & Yolanda will be serving-up their now famous Dessert Trio: fondant au chocolat, crepe suzette with Grand Marnier poured on top and set alight! With a couple scoops of artisan ice cream just to take-up that last little space in your tummy. And of course a choice of one of two French aperitifs: Rumaresq or Muscat de bagatelle to accompany our sweet treat. So come and wine and dine like a local!
