Our newest addition to the Darlinghurst Dining Tour is bei bar and bistro located in the iconic Taylor Square precinct, the heart of Darlo.
The concept for the new venue was conceived during a leisurely bike ride. Chef Felix Rutz, in collaboration with his partner Leigh Cholakos, was struck with inspiration as he pedaled past the vacant space next to the Oxford Hotel. Having run Darling Point institution Bei Amici for the past 16 years niether Feliz and Leigh initially entertained the idea of another restaurant venture, but both were captivated by the potential of the location. Upon learning of the upcoming cultural developments in the area—including the opening of QTopia and the transformation of the Darlinghurst Courthouse into a cultural precinct—the duo saw an opportune moment to bring their vision to life.
Set in the ground floor of a historic early modernist building from 1923, the restaurant offers prime people-watching real estate overlooking the bustling square, showcasing the charm of a bygone era. The contemporary dining room with a Scandinavian design vibe, featuring a seasonal Mediterranean menu, feels buzzy and comfortable.
As our new starting point there is a choice of welcome cocktail on offer: Aperol Spritz, Margarita or Negroni to kick off the night. If your jet-lag is kicking-in beer, wine and non-alcoholic options are also available. A delicious mezze of marinated Sicilian Olives, bei focaccia with fermented garlic and honey butter, seasonal vegetarian dip and Italian cheese and salami to share with your fellow guests and local guide will whet your appetite for the night.
Located a few steps from the famous Darlinghurst Rainbow crossing and the high-energy pulse of Oxford Street. You can feel the grit that holds together this nightlife precinct, building on its rich history of gay-culture and the darker side of Sydney’s nightlife.
